Seperti yang kita tahu, ASN BGP mulanya hanya sebesar 2 byte. Sehingga, hanya ada 65.536 kemungkinan ASN, dengan sejumlah ASN yang direserved oleh IANA untuk keperluan ASN privat (64512 – 65534), reusable ASN, dan ASN tertentu (0, 65535, dan 23456).
